The bill in the Wisconsin Legislature which would have made oral chemotherapy drugs more affordable for cancer patients has been stalled due to some unusual maneuvering by Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald. These oral chemotherapy drugs are life-saving treatments. Please read the article about the bill and Senator Fitzgerald’s political footwork in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
According to the article in the Journal Sentinel, Jon Erpenbach, a State Senator who supports the bill, stated in response: “”I think with certain GOP legislators, the insurance industry has more pull than people with cancer. . . . I don’t know how else to put it.” Senator Fitzgerald acknowledged that the bill has the backing of a majority of the senators but that it was not supported by a majority of the Republican caucus.
In other words, a majority of the State Senate supports the bill but Senator Fitzgerald apparently feels that is not sufficient. And they call this a democratic process.
